The New York Mets signed outfielder Willy Mo Pena to a minor league deal. Pena will attend extended soring training before being sent to Triple-A Buffalo. Pena, 27, hit .205/.243/.267 in 206 plate appearances last season.
Pena might have had a better chance to crack the big league club if the team hadn’t signed Gary Sheffield. The Mets could turn to Pena if Sheffield flops, but right now Pena is not nearly ready to face major league pitching.
