Angels Re-Sign Bobby Abreu for 2 More Years

Johnny @ 2:06 pm — Filed under: Transactions (trades, free agent signings)

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim re-signed outfielder Bobby Abreu to a two year deal worth $19 million with an option for $9 million in 2012 or a $1 million buyout. The option vests if Abreu reaches 550 plate appearances in 2011 or a combined 1,100 plate appearances in 2010 and 2011. Abreu, 35, hit .293/.390/.435 in 667 plate appearances last season.

The deal almost guarantees Abreu will stick in Anaheim for the next three seasons. The right fielder has reached at least 667 plate appearances for 11 consecutive seasons.

The money seems fair, considering Abreu’s offensive performance last season, but the length could bite the Angels. The 35 year-old has seen his power decrease in recent seasons, and he already is a defensive liability.
